Gorge hike with fascinating flora and fauna

The hike through the Barranco de los Molinos leads through an impressive gorge in the west of Fuerteventura, which is known for its unique geology and vegetation.

The hiking route starts near Puertito de los Molinos and stretches for around 7 kilometres (there and back). This hike is ideal for nature lovers as it leads through a quiet valley surrounded by steep rock faces and is home to a variety of plant and animal species.

The Barranco de los Molinos is a green oasis in the otherwise dry landscape of the island. The hiking trail follows a natural stream that constantly carries water and revitalises the ravine. Along the way, you will come across a variety of different bird species, including the rare red-breasted goose (Branta ruficollis), which is a particular highlight for birdwatchers with its red-brown breast and contrasting black and white wings.

At the end of the route, a lush green rock face awaits hikers, which is fed by an underground watercourse that collects rainwater from the surrounding landscape. With a bit of luck, you might even spot a free-roaming goat or two roaming curiously through the valley or resting in a crevice.

During the nesting season from 15 February to 31 July, access to the Barranco is closed to protect the birds, but there is an alternative route above the gorge.

This path offers a vantage point that is ideal for birdwatching and also provides a wide view of the surrounding landscape.
