History and geology along the Atlantic coast
The Ajuy - Peña Horadada hiking route starts at Playa de Ajuy and runs along the cliffs to the famous caves, the Cuevas de Ajuy, which were probably used by pirates in the 15th and 16th centuries as a hiding place for their booty before they set off on further raids.
Historic lime kilns can be seen along the way, reminiscent of the time when lime burning still played an important role on the island. In the 19th and early 20th centuries, the lime burned here was used both for the island and as an export commodity, which was transported by ship to other Canary Islands and the Spanish mainland.
Another highlight of this hike are the geological formations, which are among the oldest rock formations in the Canary Islands. With an estimated age of 100 to 150 million years, they offer unique insights into the history of the formation of the islands.
The route leads along spectacular cliffs and offers impressive views of the open Atlantic. The combination of historical evidence, geological wonders and powerful nature makes the hike from Ajuy to Peña Horadada a special experience.
