The Barranco de los Encantados ("Gorge of the Enchanted"), also known as the Barranco de los Enamorados ("Gorge of Lovers"), is located in the northern part of Fuerteventura between El Cotillo and Tindaya.

The gorge is characterised by fossilised sand deposits, fossils and unusual rock formations created by erosion.

The hiking trail leads through a wide, sandy landscape, which turns into the characteristic fossilised dunes after a short distance.

This ancient coastal landscape, which was still below sea level around 135,000 years ago, was exposed by the retreat of the water and the erosion of the rock.

Particularly impressive are the fossil remains of the land snail genus Theba, especially the species Theba pisana ("the sand-coloured snail"). These remains offer valuable insights into the palaeontological history of the region and tell of a time when the area was shaped completely differently.

The unusual, sometimes bizarrely shaped rock structures make the Barranco a popular photo motif and invite you to marvel.
