Hike through a green barranco

A hidden paradise on Fuerteventura's west coast

Puertito de Los Molinos is a small, secluded fishing village on the west coast of Fuerteventura, which is characterised by its special location and unique charm.

Nestled in a sheltered bay and surrounded by high cliffs, the village is an absolute insider tip. The village impresses with its wild coastline and a beach that changes its appearance depending on the season: While fine sand dominates in summer, in winter the beach appears as a stone beach. This stretch of beach is particularly visible at low tide, exposing the surrounding rock formations. There is a small chapel in the centre of the village, which contributes to the tranquil atmosphere with its simple charm.

A special feature are the numerous ducks that have made the car park their home and greet visitors in a friendly manner - an extremely unusual sight on the island.

A popular excursion destination is the Barranco de Los Molinos, which is ideal for hiking with its unique flora and fauna. The barranco carries water all year round and is closed from February to June to protect the nesting sites. At the end of the barranco, above the car park, a fossil sand layer is revealed that is an impressive 135,000 years old and offers insights into the geological history of the island.

Another highlight is the Los Molinos cave, which is only accessible once a year in September during a special tidal period. During this extremely low tide, the water recedes so far that a sandy path to the cave is exposed. However, access is only safe during a short window of time, as the tide returns quickly and washes over the path again - if the timing is wrong, there is a risk to life.
