Betancuria is the oldest and historically most important town on Fuerteventura, located in a fertile valley in the centre of the island. Founded in the 15th century, Betancuria was once the capital of the island and an important religious, political and economic centre.

The village is characterised by its well-preserved colonial architecture and the impressive Iglesia de Santa María, one of the oldest cathedrals in the Canary Islands.

The cobbled streets of Betancuria are home to several museums, including the Museo Arqueológico de Fuerteventura, which offers a deep insight into the long history of Fuerteventura.

The village looks like a green oasis, surrounded by numerous trees and plants, which give it a special charm in the middle of the otherwise dry landscape of the island. This region forms the oldest geological massif in the Canary Islands, which was formed around 22 million years ago and gives the landscape a special historical and geological significance.

The area around Betancuria is also ideal for hiking through the picturesque valley and the surrounding mountains, from where you can enjoy a magnificent view of the entire region.

A visit to Betancuria offers a journey into the island's past and can be easily combined with a detour to the nearby viewpoints, such as the Mirador Guise y Ayose.
