Oldest rock strata in the Canary Islands

Playa de Ajuy

The Cuevas de Ajuy, located on the west coast of Fuerteventura, are one of the most geologically significant places on the island. The surrounding rock formations expose layers of rock that are over 100 million years old - making them some of the oldest visible layers on the entire Canary Islands.

A well-maintained coastal path leads from Ajuy to the caves, offering impressive views of the rugged cliffs, the open Atlantic Ocean and the striking formations of dark volcanic rock and light-coloured limestone along the way.

The region is part of a geological conservation area and delights nature lovers, hikers and photography enthusiasts alike with its seemingly primeval landscape.
