Ceramics, tools, genetic characteristics and linguistic parallels point to this.<\/p><p data-start=\"1213\" data-end=\"1233\">The Mahos lived in:<\/p><ul data-start=\"1234\" data-end=\"1424\"><li data-start=\"1234\" data-end=\"1271\"><p data-start=\"1236\" data-end=\"1271\">Caves and simple stone houses<\/p><\/li><li data-start=\"1272\" data-end=\"1328\"><p data-start=\"1274\" data-end=\"1328\">small communities spread across the island<\/p><\/li><li data-start=\"1329\" data-end=\"1424\"><p data-start=\"1331\" data-end=\"1424\">a barren, dry landscape, which they utilised with impressive adaptability<\/p><\/li><\/ul><p data-start=\"1426\" data-end=\"1520\">Goat farming played a central role in their everyday lives - and still characterises Fuerteventura social and political structure that divided the island into two large dominions:<\/p><h5 data-start=\"305\" data-end=\"348\"><strong data-start=\"309\" data-end=\"348\">Maxorata - the northern kingdom<\/strong><\/h5><p data-start=\"349\" data-end=\"639\">The larger, northern part of Fuerteventura was known as Maxorata.<br data-start=\"421\" data-end=\"424\" \/>The majority of the population lived here, spread across villages, cave settlements and small communities.<br data-start=\"530\" data-end=\"533\" \/>The area was more fertile than the south and offered better opportunities for cattle breeding and gathering.<\/p><p data-start=\"349\" data-end=\"639\">Due to the comparatively better conditions, Maxorata developed into the central living space of the Mahos, where social structures, trade and everyday processes were centred.\u201c<\/p><h5 data-start=\"641\" data-end=\"681\"><strong data-start=\"645\" data-end=\"681\">Jand\u00eda - the southern kingdom<\/strong><\/h5><p data-start=\"682\" data-end=\"952\">The south is known as Jand\u00eda - a vast, sometimes even more barren area characterised by the Jand\u00eda peninsula.<br data-start=\"823\" data-end=\"826\" \/>Although the region was less densely populated, Jand\u00eda had an important strategic and cultural significance for the Mahos, as the peninsula with its natural defences, waterholes and coastal accesses served both as a place of retreat and as a ritually significant area.<\/p><h5 data-start=\"682\" data-end=\"952\"><strong>The rulers of the two kingdoms<\/strong><\/h5><p data-start=\"998\" data-end=\"1130\">Both kingdoms were led by their own kings, who had a central role as political and spiritual authorities.<\/p><p data-start=\"1132\" data-end=\"1179\">These were shortly before the European conquest:<\/p><ul data-start=\"1840\" data-end=\"1907\"><li data-start=\"1840\" data-end=\"1874\"><p data-start=\"1842\" data-end=\"1874\"><strong data-start=\"1842\" data-end=\"1851\">Guise<\/strong> - King of Maxorata<\/p><\/li><li data-start=\"1875\" data-end=\"1907\"><p data-start=\"1877\" data-end=\"1907\"><strong data-start=\"1877\" data-end=\"1886\">Ayoze<\/strong> - King of Jand\u00eda<\/p><\/li><\/ul><p data-start=\"1909\" data-end=\"2043\">The two leaders ruled independently of each other, but maintained peace or strategic alliances between their empires, depending on the situation.<\/p><p data-start=\"1909\" data-end=\"2043\">Today, visitors encounter their names in various places, such as the large bronze statues at the Mirador Guise y Ayose near Betancuria.<\/p><h5 data-start=\"3103\" data-end=\"3285\">Insight into the past:<\/h5><p data-start=\"3103\" data-end=\"3285\">If you want to understand the world of the Mahos even better, the Museo Arqueol\u00f3gico de Fuerteventura in Betancuria is one of the most important places to visit on the island.<\/p><p data-start=\"3103\" data-end=\"3285\">The museum shows:<\/p><ul data-start=\"3286\" data-end=\"3482\"><li data-start=\"3286\" data-end=\"3320\"><p data-start=\"3288\" data-end=\"3320\">original artefacts from the Mahos<\/p><\/li><li data-start=\"3321\" data-end=\"3359\"><p data-start=\"3323\" data-end=\"3359\">Reconstructions of their way of life<\/p><\/li><li data-start=\"3360\" data-end=\"3406\"><p data-start=\"3362\" data-end=\"3406\">Insights into tools, ceramics and everyday life<\/p><\/li><li data-start=\"3407\" data-end=\"3482\"><p data-start=\"3409\" data-end=\"3482\">the historical reached the islands - led by the Norman Jean de B\u00e9thencourt and his companion Gadifer de La Salle.<\/p><p data-start=\"2276\" data-end=\"2401\">After conquering Lanzarote, they came to Fuerteventura and clashed with the two existing kingdoms.<\/p><p data-start=\"2403\" data-end=\"2584\">In 1405, Guise and Ayoze surrendered to the European conquerors.<br data-start=\"2476\" data-end=\"2479\" \/>This marked the beginning of a new era - and the more than 2,400-year history of the Mahos slowly came to an new structures and ways of life with them<\/p><\/li><li data-start=\"592\" data-end=\"696\"><p data-start=\"594\" data-end=\"696\">Decline of indigenous culture due to mixing, adaptation and the data-start=\"254\" data-end=\"410\">Recurrent pirate attacks, especially by North African corsairs (raids on coastal towns, cattle thefts, kidnapping of individual inhabitants).<\/p><\/li><li
